Rob Handcock and Bazz Bevan will be contesting the 2024 TT on the last Shelbourne Formula 2 sidecar that Joe Shelbourne built. For this year, the engine has been lowered in the chassis, which has been enabled by fitting Lumley dry sump. (For that, also new engine plates were made and anodized turquoise as requested.) Knock-on effect of this is that Rob's driving position is much lower, which will improve performance in high-speed sections of the TT course.

The sidecar is also having its yearly make over. New brake parts have been fitted and the new fairing is lighter than the previous one.

We are moving! But not very far. Just another building in our estate. Bigger one, with the view on the lovely fields. We should be completely moved by the end of March. At the moment, our new unit is being improved. The walls were painted and electricians are doing their job currently. So far, all going well, so fingers crossed!

To improve the steering of this BSA sidecar outfit, used for touring in the summer months, leading link forks were fitted. This will enable the wider handlebars to be removed, replacing with standard bars thanks to the greatly reduced steering effort.

The great variety of work that turns up at the Lumley Engineering workshop is always keeping us on our toes. So it was when Ian Arnold got in touch with us about his land speed record project. He had made a prototype 18 foot long streamliner chassis, to be powered by a turbocharged 70cc 2-stroke engine with a target of reaching 173mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Our mission was to re-create the prototype but in a way that would hold together long enough to make the target speed, and just as importantly, to satisfy the technical committee of the organisers who have very fixed ideas about materials and methods that may or may not be used in the construction of a land speed record motorcycle.

Throughout his numerous visits to the workshop, Ian was always astounded by the care and preparation that went into every joint in his chassis. In order to make a two minute weld, it is necessary to spend an hour making the parts fit together perfectly beforehand. At every stage, images of frame members and joints were sent to the technical committee in the US for approval. This will potentially save a lot of time and heartache, which could be caused by having to make change on the spot. Effectively, Ian's streamliner will have passed scrutineering before it arrive on American shores.

Mindful of the possibility of going for other records, the engine bay was made to be flexible so that other configurations can be used in the future without major modification. This should allow Ian to pursue other records, or make it easier to sell the streamliner should he choose to follow a different direction.

With covid still causing travel problems around the world, Ian is not sure when his chance will come but is using the time to build and test all the systems that go to make the bike work from standstill to 173mph and back again. We will be watching his progress on racetothesalt.com, all the way and looking for another record to be brought home to Britain.

When one ZXR10 engine isn't enough for your Autograss car what do you do? The answer is quite simple, you fit two. While the answer may be simple, the achievement of that as a reality takes a little more work.

With the engines forming an arch and rotating in opposite directions, the drive train has to be a fairly trick piece of work in itself in order to keep the wheels driving in the same direction at similar speed.

Then, in order to physically fit and to ensure constant oil pressure even under the extreme centrifugal force experienced in Autograss racing, both engines had to be fitted with dry sump systems. Luckily, there is a standard Lumley Engineering dry sump kit available which we were able to fit quickly.

Even the fuel tank sits in the tiny space between the two engines, and the whole car bristles with ingenious touches that help to make a quart fit into a pint pot very elegantly.

The owner of this very smart and eyecatching Harley Davidson outfit wanted greater stability under braking and more precise steering with reduced effort.

With the original telescopic forks fitted, you did need arms like Popeye to negotiate corners and were constantly fighting the bike for straight line stability.

The answer was quite simple, to fit a pair of our own custom leading link forks. By building from the ground up, in collaboration with our customer, the rake, trail, spring rates and damping can be set up to suit perfectly the rider, the type of riding they do and the loads that they carry.

The conversion used Hagon spring/damper units along with a Honda front wheel and brakes.

Spring is in the air in our new premises. With the coming of April and all the beautiful weather that it brings, we will be able to leave the doors and windows open more than when we first moved in during the winter.

Well, hold that for a moment, as the spring seems to have forgotten us, the doors and windows will have to stay firmly closed for the time being. It is just as well really as the newly installed cnc machinery is busy day in day out, with new projects, prototypes and production runs being progressed all the time.

So, a huge thank you to all our lovely customers, for keeping us too busy to worry about the horrid weather. What with that and the one-off, specialist fabrication work that is coming in, we look forward to being able to ignore many more seasons to come.

The "Team Past it On" sidecar outfit was brought to us in a fairly sorry state after their crash at Pembrey. This bike was built in 2000 and we have known it all through its racing history. It has always been a privilege to work on one of Trevor Iresons masterpieces.

Once the chassis had been repaired, we were able to make a new floor pan working from Trevor Ireson's original mould.

The before and after photo sequence shows the damage to the main box section 'spine' of the outfit as well as massive damage to the tubular framework of the sidecar floor. Because the outfit was so well known to us, we were able to get the chassis back to its original glory and we are looking forward to seeing "Team Past it On" out there campaigning this lovely piece of engineering for many years to come.

Restorations are not just about motorised vehicles. Some historic engineering has to be pushed, but it still has to be just right when looking for the most authentic appearance. One example, is the vintage Silver Cross pram that these wheels came off. It was being lovingly restored by its owner, who entrusted the wheels to us for re-chroming of the rims and rebuilding the hubs, bearings and spokes.

The gleaming result looks as good as new and we are sure that the owner will be pushing it with pride. Perhaps we will have to wait a few years for the occupant to show the same appreciation, but it is a safe bet that when it comes to the time for them to have offspring of their own, this pram will still be in fine working order.

When Simon Heal found that the Yamaha R1 engine in his Grasstrack sidecar outfit was getting a bit hot and bothered, he turned to Lumley Engineering for a solution. the result can be seen in the photograph, showing an unconventional, yet effective design that has helped keep the temperature needle nearer the middle.

The tubular water galleries are much more robust than those common on conventional radiators, and there are no closely spaced fins to clog with the inevitable mud thrown up in the course of a grasstrack race. Once again, taking an unconventional approach to a problem has brought about a practical solution.

This week's project involved modifying a grass-track sidecar. The owner of said sidecar asked us to upgrade the existing flat slide carburetors to electric fuel injection. To do this, we would also need to make the switch from burning methanol fuel to using petrol.

Firstly, we custom-made an air box to suit the modified throttle bodies. Once this was complete, we added an extra tank to act as a swirl pot and contain the high pressure fuel pump. We also modified the cooling system to cope with the extra heat produced when burning petrol.

Finally, a bespoke wiring loom was made to ensure all the electronics worked, before mapping the engine for maximum power on our dynamometer.

Our customers were incredibly pleased with the job we had done. Their first time out using the modified sidecar exceeded everyone's expectations!

There are so many joys to owning a classic car, from the nostalgic looks to the fun, hands-on approach to driving. Due to the car's age, however, things can wear out! Our most recent project was a prime example - we had the task of repairing the gear box of a classic Mini. The gearbox came to us with damaged casing which was affecting the engine noise and vibration.

The first job on hand was to use one of our machines to cut out the damage and replace it with an accurately-sized hole. Once this had been done, we could move on to making a new gear box bush to replace the old damaged one. As this is a fairly common repair, it was easy for us to make 10 new gear box bushes once the machines were set up.

To complete the job, we slotted the gear box bush into the hole made previously. The owner was very pleased with this repair, and can now carry on driving his beautiful classic Mini with no more problems!

Nice to see a Jimny jeep which we worked on a couple of years ago again. This time the owner wanted a small rail around the boot cover to stop his luggage sliding off!

The original job was to fabricate a steel roof to replace the soft top and fit a back window to form a cab, also to make a lockable cover over the rear section.

The Yamaha Past Masters series is designed to keep old two stroke bikes from the 1980s and 1990s racing. The bikes are all ridden as they were designed to be ridden, which does mean that on occasion things break.

Even more insidious is the onset of rust in fuel tanks, which is a universal problem, clogging fuel lines with debris and even when meticulous filtration is applied, causing engine seizures as two strokes are fairly sensitive to lack of fuel, especially as it carries their vital lubricant.

The rider of this bike was at his wits’ end when we suggested a simple solution. Our answer was to cut the bottom out of the rotten old steel tank, fabricate a ten litre alloy tank to sit underneath, then simply bolt the old one on as a cover to keep the bike’s silhouette in keeping with the regulations and spirit of the class.

Simple! With the cover in place now, nobody would ever know it wasn’t a standard tank, and the rider is as pleased as punch as he has lovely clean fuel flowing into his carbs.

This Cobra replica kit car came to us with MGB front suspension and Ford Granada rear. The challenge was to manufacture the new hubs with bearing housings to suit the existing steering and suspension fittings.

New discs were manufactured and mounted on the rear of the new hubs, the front ones being machined to accept MGB bearing sizes to fit directly onto the steering uprights.

The drive spline from the Granada was copied on to the new rear hubs and the lower suspension mount has been modified to suit the new, wider wheels.

These now fit perfectly, and add the appropriate classic look and feel to the car, which now benefits from new discs and hubs in the latest materials for better performance and longer life than the old units.

Our customer was building a replica Yamaha TA125 and needed a new fuel tank, so we made two.

From the detailed measurements and photographs he provided, we were able to fabricate a tank that looked exactly like the original in aluminium. Here is a picture of an original TA 125 tank. To see our version, click in the thumbnails below.
